This contents page was taken from 'VIBE' magazine. The main focal point of the page is the image of the woman. She is laying on the floor with her legs crossed in the air. This is her code of gesture. Her legs are spelling out the letter 'V' relating to the name of the magazine. Her code of expression is somewhat seductive and inviting; inviting an audience to read the magazine. She is a black, attractive female who is flaunting her figure to a reader, presumably attracting a male audience. However, it may also attract a female audience as they could be envious of the woman, wishing that they looked as glamourous as her. Her code of dress is minimal, a top/ leotard which is again, flaunting her figure.
The lighting has been used effectively- brightest around the woman, as though there is a spotlight being shone on her, and darker around the edges, casting shadows. This has been done to focus the attention on the woman. There are no bold colour contrasts, mainly black, white and grey, which combine/blend well. The main heading of the page reads 'CO NTEN TS' in a bold, white, large font which stands out and clearly tells a reader what is on that page. Having a break between 'CO NTEN TS' is typical of vibe magazine and they are persistent with this in all of their issues. This makes an audience familiar with their magazine. The headings for the actual contents are in a smaller, black font, reading 'Features' and 'Fashion.' From this we can see another way that they are targeting their audiences. Stereotypically, fashion articles would be aimed at females. The overall contents page is simple, and I think that this is effective.
The main woman of the page is Solange Knowles, a well known RnB artist. The fact that is is the main image suggests to a reader that hers is the main article of the magazine in that issue. Many fans of her as an artist will be drawn to this magazine and want to read the article about her.
